Stay Active in January

Happy new year to you all. This is our guide to give you lasting movement throughout 2026.  With January being a cold month with less daylight hours it is important to have a holistic approach.  Fitness is one of the top New Year’s resolutions over the last few years which doesn’t come too much of a surprise. So how much exercise should we do?  The main centres for disease and prevention and the NHS recommends that adults especially older adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensive activity each week.

If you have been less active over Christmas it is important to get back into your routine slowly to avoid any injury. Our focus in January is to reestablish the foundations of movement so starting with strength, balance and flexibility. Having strong legs are vital for anyone to get out from a chair or for walking to collect the shopping.  While good balance is our best defence against falling.

If you have an injury or a chronic issue this should be the first priority to address. Once that injury is better you should sit for less and to move more,  counteracting sedentary moments and building in planned movement breaks during your day. In order not to get future problems or injuries not only is movement important it’s also about how to move correctly to prevent future problems

So we all know someone who has started the new year exercising saying they go to the gym every day/exercise every day or they walk every day /four times a week and this goes well for quite a while, until one day they miss there exercise they then feel bad about it and then fall out of the habit entirely.  This doesn’t happen because you’re not disciplined it’s because you’re trying to go against your natural instincts so forcing yourself to adhere to a programme or a workout regime.  Make it simpler just move every day it could be on a Sunday morning you go for a longer walk round the block or you walk around the block twice. Or on that Sunday that you don’t go out walking but instead you do some gentle stretches on your bed.  By altering your fitness goals and making them flexible it is easier to keep up with the rituals of daily movement

If you have been dealing with physical pain or tension or a lack of mobility you know first hand how these effect your mind and body.  Using trained physiotherapists we can offer tailored solutions to our patients to help them overcome physical challenges and limitations and help them back to feeling their best.  Getting outside to exercise is important and has proven benefits on our health both the body and the mind nature not only relieve stress but it’s also a perfect opportunity for us to move our bodies and for mindfulness making it an ideal way to holistically support your Wellness.

It is important to note good nutrition is essential to keep you healthy and assist with recovery from illness or surgery.  Sleep is vital, when we sleep our tissues heal and our cells regenerate.  Consistent sleep hygiene is important such as no screens for a hour before bed, your brain needs to unwind.

Health is the most important thing in our life.

Health is true wealth, and is more important than money.

Staying Healthy means having a fit body and mind.

We should take care of our health every day.

To stay healthy, we should exercise.

For a healthy mind, we should meditate.

He who has health, has hope; and he who has hope, has everything. (Arabian Proverb)
